Acedia

Kirk Gauthier This EP will absolutely and completely warp your mind. The blend of doom, drone, industrial, post-metal, and noise rock comes together so organically that you’ll find yourself wondering why no one has ever combined these styles together before. “Tell Me Why the Flowers Died” sounds like the score to the most terrifying horror movie ever made. “25th Lucid Hour of Begging” is total SUNN O))) worship but somehow darker. And “Acedia (The Joyless Heart)” is just pure paranoid anguish. Favorite track: 25TH LUCID HOUR OF BEGGING.

1.
when you directed me, lord, you broke my light, you shaped my suffering, you showed me the dark. now i want you tell me, in the fade of my promiscuous praise, i want you to tell me now, why you think the flowers died.
2.
radiant death, follow me. between the days, i feed your health.
3.
the holy light crawls upon me like urushiol. strangled by tradition, i don’t move anymore. except to turn from his cold, eloquent love.

about

“…glittering doom metal…where paranoia and relief mingle like wind and rain…Acedia is as dark as its title suggests.” - Scream Blast Repeat

“…will absolutely and completely warp your mind.” - Noob Heavy

March 2023 Roundup: noobheavy.com/mad-march-roundup/

“...the nature of acedia is the flight from God, the wish to be alone...and not disturbed by the presence of God. The afflicted one is loath to praise God in prayer. The most dangerous aspect of acedia is...the genuine hatred of being." (Catholic Education Resource Center)

Slain Thought’s second EP "Acedia" takes a harrowing left turn from debut "A Failed Exorcism" (2022), embracing experimentation as a means to explore the insanity, dread, and hopelessness that comes from abandoning an indifferent god—and seeking death as a means of comfort instead.

While dirty, depressive bass remains at the heart of Slain Thought’s blend of doom, industrial, and post-metal, "Acedia" utilizes an array of unconventional and often improvised instrumentation and vocalizations to evoke unsettling atmospheres and ugly moods.

From the riff/feedback duet and unhinged screaming of “Tell Me Why the Flowers Died” to the suffocating ambience, mandolin, keyboard manipulation, spoken chants, and black metal shrieks of “25th Lucid Hour of Begging” to the found percussion, beaten-down melodies, lethargic death metal bellows, kalimba, and ripping noise of the title track, "Acedia" snuffs out the last remaining embers of hope and embraces the inevitable end.

Inspiration: Ikue Mori, John Zorn, Chat Pile, Dio, "The Twilight Zone"

Acedia is Part 2.
